Billionaire ransom movie rotten tomatoes6/29/2023 Plummer gives no quarter and Scott rarely, if ever, bothers to humanize him Sony spent $8 million to stitch Plummer in Plummer is a world-class performer who endows Getty with a smarmy obstinance that aligns with the movie’s blunt storytelling The final version of the character comes across as Scrooge with a smile Plummer imbues his avaricious loner with a kind of snarky irreverence unimaginable in the showboating Spacey’s hands It’s not always clear who’s the film’s greatest villain - the kidnappers or Getty himself Just recently turned 88, Plummer projects the curdled regalness of a tycoon who views human lives as nothing more than transactions Plummer provides the right amount of lion-in-winter majesty to a character who’s been warped and isolated by his greed It’s impossible not to wonder how Spacey would have been in the role It wasn't enough for Luttrell to get rescued at the last minute in the Afghan village, narrowly evading capture nope, they had to make him have a heart attack! Seriously, 2010 was the last time Wahlberg made films genuinely worth seeking out, with The Other Guys and The Fighter releasing, and he's the least interesting aspect of the latter. Even in Lone Survivor, a true story that is ten times more dramatic than most scripts floating around Hollywood, Wahlberg and his boy Peter Berg had to embellish the facts, which were already insane in reality. Really? Daddy's Home? Daddy's Home 2? Transformers: The Last Knight? Transformers: Age of Extinction? Ted 2? Even well-intentioned films like Patriot's Day and Deepwater Horizon are rather lackluster when you look at how Wahlberg has forced himself into a Hollywood hero role within real life stories that were far more complex and messy than the movies present them, not to mention they fulfill his ego-driven fantasy to save the day in real world disasters. Worst case, which is more prevalent is "this is obviously _ with an old guy mask on top of his face". Looking through list examples of "the best old age makeup", even with those, almost all of the time, the best case scenario is "I can't recognize this actor, but this old guy looks very, very off, almost uncanny valley off". This isn't CGI where you can use it here and there to a better degree in conjunction with other techniques and have your work look great and age nicely as the technology gives you more and more oportunities makeup really doesn't seem to have made that level of advance when it comes to aging any actor, and when you use prostethics, it looks mostly just as bad now as it looked back when it first started being used. I can't shake the feeling that anytime someone is aged through prostethics it looks awful and very noticeable, and that hasn't changed in decades, and the best make up artists are working on the movie biz, so this is the best they can do. They aged Sydow wonderfully yes but he already looked older than his age, and they used just a bit of make up, it was a very particular case, very much not the norm. Ridley is at his best when he doesn’t get the final cut, like in The Martian and Gladiator. Though to be fair, the script never mentioned casting Sean Bean for that role, which is 95% of the humor. Hell, he filmed the Council of Elrond scene in the Martian having zero clue why it was funny until test screenings pointed it out, and then he tried to edit it out. Like him saying the Deckard is a replicant through and through in Blade Runner - Ridley filmed him as a replicant but everyone loves Deckard because of his humanity or withering thereof. Simply, Ridley Scott doesn’t really understand his scripts as much as he should. He’s someone who is super faithful and respectful to the writing, almost too much to a fault, where he doesn’t know what’s best to edit in and edit out - which is why so many superior “Director’s Cuts” of mediocre theatrical Ridley films exist, which are really just the theatrical releases with all the scenes he shouldn’t have deleted put back in. Scott is only as good as the script, IMO.
